What is Taekwondo? & is it right for me?
Taekwondo is a Korean self defence martial art. It was introduced to the world by General Choi Hong-Hi who is the father and founder of Taekwondo. The martial art became formally recognised in 1955, with the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) being formed in 1966. Taekwondo can be described simply as a version of unarmed combat designed for self defence. Translated literally 'Tae' means to kick or smash with the foot. 'Kwon' is to destroy with the hand or fist. 'Do' means an art or way. Thus taken together we have 'Taekwondo'
Taekwondo is taught with five main principles. Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control & Indomitable Spirit. With these main principles students develop inner strength and peace. These attributes are becoming more important in our modern world.
Taekwondo is suitable for everyone. Both sexes can study with equal benefit and enjoyment. Age is also not a problem with study recommended to begin at 5 years old going up to 90 or more!
Taekwondo is learnt in mixed classes of all ages and abilities. Training is non or light contact (certainly until higher skill levels and grades are reached) with no throwing or falling techniques. From early stages where simple punching and kicking techniques are learnt, students are gradually taught more complex techniques as they are promoted through the coloured belts to black belt. During this training there is an emphasis on improving fitness and developing the correct mental attitude. Confidence and a general sense of wellbeing are a welcome benefit of this training.
Anyone can study Taekwondo and gain the benefits of this modern martial art.
Taekwondo for Children.
All children can benefit from studying Taekwondo. Your child will gain more confidence and have greater respect for others. With regular training your child will also develop more fitness, flexibility, balance, coordination, and concentration. As your child progresses, he or she will also become noticeably more self confident.
Children who have been the victims of bullying can prevent further problems by simply improving their self confidence and situation awareness. This is the best non confrontational approach to bullying.
An interest that our children can use to keep fit and have fun for the rest of their lives is priceless!
Taekwondo for Adults.
We all need to keep fit and exercise. Taekwondo is the perfect way to achieve this while learning to defend yourself. All training is energetic and fun, giving the participant an all over workout without even realising it. Training regularly will also improve flexibility and poise. Students develop greater confidence and strength which can help in all conflict situations however large or small. Taekwondo can help all adults escape from the pressures of modern life simply by focusing on the training.
